Avis is a historic town in the Alto Alentejo, shaped by the former Order of Avis, its castle and the São Bento convent. It is also a destination for nature and leisure, with the Maranhão Reservoir and the River Beach at Clube Náutico de Avis.
A town with centuries of history
Avis was conquered from the Moors in 1211. Between 1214 and 1223 the castle was built, and the town became closely linked to the Military Order of Avis. Its importance continued with the Avis Dynasty, associated with King João I, leaving a heritage that still defines the historic centre today.

São Bento de Avis Convent
The former convent, headquarters of the Order of Avis since the 12th century, includes the church, cloister, chapter house and other monumental spaces. The former dormitory houses the Municipal Museum of Avis.
Maranhão Reservoir
One of the municipality's great natural landscapes, popular for water activities, scenic views and wildlife and bird observation.
River Beach at Clube Náutico de Avis
A leisure area beside the reservoir, with a river beach, picnic facilities and infrastructure for activities such as canoeing, rowing and stand up paddle.
